Healing from Within: Sheradon Orton's Journey with Fiber and Mental Health

Pure Living Family (00:01.634)
Hey friends, welcome back to another episode of the Pure Living Family podcast. I'm excited to introduce you to my new friend and you'll get to know a little bit more about her history from her. But Sheridan, thanks so much for joining the podcast today and thanks for coming to share your story.

Sheradon Orton (00:22.525)
Yeah, excited.

Pure Living Family (00:25.432)
Well, Sherrod and I got introduced through a mutual friend and just so our audience gets to know you a little bit better, why don't you just tell us a little bit about yourself? Where did you grow up and are you married? Where do you live? Let's just get a little bit of background of who you are.

Sheradon Orton (00:45.823)
Okay, so I am married. I have three boys, 17, almost 16, and 12. And I grew up in Provo, Utah. After getting married, we lived in Lehigh, Utah, and then our family actually moved all the way down to Australia for a few years.

And then we moved to Dubai for five years. And right now we are living in Las Vegas. So we've kind of lived all over and have loved to travel. We have been to multiple countries. Our goal is to hit 100 countries. So we're getting up there.

Pure Living Family (01:25.634)
Well tell us about these travels. So you said Australia and Dubai. What took you to those countries?

Sheradon Orton (01:32.895)
So my husband, yeah, he got a job with Rakuten and that took us down to Australia. So we were down there for a few years. We loved it. We traveled up and down the coast of Australia, the East Coast and just loved everything about it. And then after a couple of years, we had a work transition, which took us to Dubai.

And while we were there, we traveled a lot. Dubai is an awesome place to live for one, but it's also a great place to travel because that's a good hub for a lot of different places. we spent a lot of time traveling as a family. love to explore. We like doing things instead of getting things. you know, a tradition of ours is traveling for Christmas instead of.

getting lots of presents.

Pure Living Family (02:33.198)
I love that. Experiences over things. That's one thing that I've talked a lot with my family. We love traveling as well. So that's really cool. Dubai is like futuristic city, right?

Sheradon Orton (02:44.455)
Yeah, it's so crazy. They've got the world's greatest, the world's tallest, the world's goldest. Like everything is the world's like biggest, you know, building all of the things. They love to show off in that aspect and the people are amazing. I mean, it's a melting pot of so many cultures. So you have people from all around the world living there. It was really cool.

Pure Living Family (03:10.734)
That's really awesome. Well, on social media, on TikTok and Instagram, you have your handle is called shared and shares. And so maybe give us a introduction of how did you get started with that handle and that personality? What brought you to share the messages that you share online?

Sheradon Orton (03:34.825)
So I came up with Sheridan.shares because I'm not a professional. I just love to share the things that I am learning.

hope and pray that it helps other people. so all of the things that, you know, I started this account because, you know, I had spent years struggling with mental health issues, gut issues, chronic fatigue, a lot of health issues. And when I started,

working out using a certain system that I can go into but also feeling better, that weight of depression had...

completely lifted and I was like, I have to share with people about this, like gut health and mental health go hand in hand. Like I had no idea how impactful it was. And so that was the main reason why I was like, I have to share about this. I can't, it would be selfish for me to hold it in and not try and help others when this has helped me so much.

Pure Living Family (04:44.738)
Well, I definitely want to hear more about the protocol that you mentioned, but before we jump into that, why don't you give a scope of your struggles with mental illness? What were the lowest points and can you just give some detailed descriptions of that?

Sheradon Orton (05:00.467)
Yeah, so as a teenager, had a lot of PCOS symptoms, ovarian cysts that would burst and send me to the hospital. And because of that, had a doctor put me on birth control. And I really think that that kind of

Maybe it wasn't, maybe it was other things too, but spun me into depression and where I was crying all the time. You know, I had a wonderful family. My parents were great people. You know, I didn't have any trauma, but I felt awful. I felt weighted, dark, like, and through trying to figure out medications,

The problem with medications, especially antidepressants, is it's a guessing game. And it can be a very dangerous guessing game. And so in that process of trying to figure out which one, I was put on a certain one that brought me really low. And my lowest point was I chose to take a bunch of

the medications that I had in my cupboard. And I was just planning on, you know, my parents were in bed. Sorry, this might be too much, but.

Pure Living Family (06:31.662)
Please keep going. Thank you for sharing.

Sheradon Orton (06:36.157)
You know, my parents were, had already gone to bed and I had one of the things that I would do often was take a bath and just cry. And after taking a bath and just crying, I was so tired of feeling the way that I was. And so I went down, grabbed a bunch of this, that, you know, bunch of different things and took them all and went to lay in bed and just planned on.

drifting off. But it didn't happen like that. And I'm grateful that I got scared and went to my mom and dad and told them what I had done and rushed them to the hospital. So I have been at some very low points, some scary low points, and they have come.

Pure Living Family (07:29.582)
All

Sheradon Orton (07:33.223)
and gone, they've been up and down, but for 25 years, I've always had kind of a weight of depression in me. And, and so, and it's held me back from trying new things. It's helped me back from, you know, putting myself out there, you know, making friends. And it's, it's been, it's been a journey.

Pure Living Family (08:01.122)
Well, I want to just recognize you for the bravery and sharing that story and thank you for being vulnerable with us and giving us a bit more color and detail of that. How old were you when this took place?

Sheradon Orton (08:15.263)
I was a teen. honestly, I would try to think, I may have been 18 at the time when that happened. But a lot of high school, a lot of like that time period, I do not remember. Like, I don't know if it's like a coping mechanism that I just don't want to remember or what, but it was a hard.

hard time for me and yeah, I open up about that because I want people to know like when we talk about that, like I don't want anybody to ever, I've had too many friends and family go down that path and take it. And it's, you know, I never want anybody to ever feel like that's the option.

There are other options and especially now, the way that I feel now is like there is hope and there is happiness. There is light at the end. You can do things to address your health, your mental health in a way that will lift that darkness and that heaviness for sure.

Pure Living Family (09:33.871)
It such a beautiful comment and just for the audience to know, I don't know if my audience even knows this myself, but in 2007 I had a similar experience that I took a bunch of pills and I was actually admitted to the University of Utah psych ward for a period. And so I've gone through mental health challenges and struggles. I've been on antidepressants. I took them for almost 10 years. so meeting a

a like-minded soul like you, I love hearing these success stories because my goal and ambition is to alleviate suffering in the world and especially for parents of kids with special needs that they're under a lot of stress, anxiety, cortisol levels are equal to that of veterans. I hope you're hearing us that if you're in that dark place, there are things that we can talk about that have helped us.

And Sheridan, I'm really excited for you to talk a little bit more about your experience of that. Before we jump into that, there's one book that I just want to drop in is Dr. Chris Palmer, who is a Harvard professor, wrote Brain Energy. And he talks about all... do you have it? It's one of my favorite books. He states in the book...

Sheradon Orton (10:52.921)
I do.

Pure Living Family (10:59.156)
All mental disorders are metabolic disorders of the brain. And it could be a metabolic imbalance. And anything as like B12, magnesium, they'll all show up as anxiety. So fiber imbalance. And there's a lot that you can do, especially when it comes to nutrition, to help.

you feel better because our gut is connected to our brain and that's where our serotonin is produced. without further ado, tell us a little bit about this product or this protocol that you follow and how you kind of got introduced to it maybe when you were, I think it was in Dubai that you were first introduced.

Sheradon Orton (11:44.447)
Yeah. Yeah. So it's kind of an interesting story because, you know, I, for years, I thought I needed a medication. I needed, you know, something, you know, and there's a huge gut brain connection. I love that you brought up that book and I have it on my shelf right there. But, um, and I love following Christopher Palmer and all his stuff, but I, I in Dubai,

I started having really bad gut issues and the gut and the brain are so connected with, your gut is referred to as your second brain. so, and a lot of people don't realize that a lot of neurotransmitters and chemicals and hormones are produced in the gut that send signals to the brain. And so this is all the stuff that I've kind of learned after the fact, but I...

to get introduced to this, know, my gut issues got really bad. I, and this was in Dubai. I went to a gastroenterologist and to try and figure out what was wrong because I was having issues and I don't need to share that here because it's all TMI, but I, we went and got a colonoscopy and MRI. We did all the tests to see if I was allergic to anything. And I was like,

for sure I had some diagnosis. And he came back and said everything looked normal and that it was probably anxiety. And I was like, you've got to be kidding me. I was wanting a surgery. I was wanting a medication. I was wanting something from the doctor to say, here, this is gonna help you. And it's kind of a blessing in disguise that he said that and that there wasn't, I mean, maybe

Maybe there was some medication that he could have given me, but he gave me a laxative. And I was already on multiple antidepressants at the time. I was on four. And going to my psychiatrist monthly and doing therapy, doing all of the things that I thought was going to help me.

Sheradon Orton (14:03.711)
and my husband, so he actually, the protocol that I follow, and the products that I use, he worked on the corporate side of the business in Dubai. So that's why we were there. We were in Dubai with this company.

You know, he's he's on the corporate end doing all the things, but he's seeing people use it and get results and saying to me, Sheridan, you should use this like I think it would help your gut. You know, I think it would help your mental health. I'm hearing these stories of people, you know, and I was not going to have it like it was all natural. I thought anything natural was woo woo. It was kind of all in your head like it wasn't going to work and.

And so I just, never, over the years it was kind of little tidbits of, know, try this, try this. And I was like, uh-uh. And so finally when we moved, so the company had us move our family to Las Vegas. They needed more manufacturing. And, and so they're like, Hey, can you move your family, set this manufacturing facility up?

And after we moved here for a couple months, I feel like my gut issues were getting worse and my mental health wasn't doing so well. And he's like, you just, just try it. And I was like, fine. And I literally went in to do this to prove him wrong. Like most people, when they use this, they take before and after pictures because it helps people lose weight. A lot of people go into it for weight loss, but.

it was like I just I knew it wasn't going to work so I wasn't even going to play into any of that and after a couple weeks of using it you know at the beginning because fiber we our bodies need so much I could go into the I'm going to make this shorter but fiber is so key for our gut health and

Sheradon Orton (16:05.959)
whenever I tried the fiber before, it would hurt my stomach. And so I was like, it's not good for me. So when he said, do this, you know, I was like, okay, I'm going to do it. So the first little bit was a little rough, but then a couple of weeks in, this is about three weeks in, my teenage son came to me after school one day, nobody else was home. And he, he's 15 at the time. And he's like, Hey mom, how's your stomach?

And I was like, it's good. Why are you asking? Like it was the weirdest question for a teenage boy to ask. And he's like, well, I've just noticed you've stopped complaining about your stomach as much. And I was like, like, okay, that's interesting. You know, and I didn't, you know, I, I thought about it and I was like, okay, it is getting better. But he, you know, I was like, I don't know. Maybe it was just something, but.

here's the part that like really blew my mind. So this is about two weeks after that. I was talking with my mom on the phone and

I get emotional about this part because my mom and my sisters have been through my dark times.

Sheradon Orton (17:29.747)
You know, I love my husband, but when I'm really feeling it, I go to my mom. She was there with me when I was a teen.

So she knows how I am. She knows how I handle things. Well, there was a situation going on that was really heavy. And I was talking to her on the phone and she's like, hey, Sheridan, you're handling this really well. And I was like, thanks, just kind of brushing it off. And she's like, no, Sheridan, you're handling this really well. Like, this isn't your normal self.

Pure Living Family (17:47.48)
Mm-hmm.

Sheradon Orton (18:10.985)
kind of good job, like is what she was saying, like, and kind of doing a shoulder shake, like, this is really new, you know? And for me, that was huge. For her not knowing that I was using this system, using these products, and like my mind was like, my gosh, and then it just kind of all clicked, like my stomach was feeling better. I was, I used to...

Be taking two to three naps a day. My brain fog was so bad. Like I thought Alzheimer's was in my future. I but for my mom to point that out to me was like, holy cow. Yeah. And it just continually got better. Like that weight of depression just started to lift off of me and the anxiety started to like free up and I didn't I wasn't as getting so caught up in certain things.

like I used to and people closest to me could see it even when I was not willing to, like I was trying to prove that it wasn't going to work. And so that's the thing where it's always kind of been like, well, I just need to think better or I just need to pray harder or I just need to, you know, do these things. But our bodies, I mean, we work at a cellular level and

Pure Living Family (19:08.706)
Thank you.

Pure Living Family (19:17.88)
Ha

Sheradon Orton (19:33.841)
our hormones, our thoughts, like they all interconnect. And that's kind of the message that I want to give out is like, I spent years thinking I just needed to think better or have, you know, all of those things, but working on my gut health and my metabolic health, that is when those things started to lift. So.

Pure Living Family (20:01.216)
that for so many reasons. Dr. Mark Hyman talks about how we need 30 grams of fiber per day which in majority of the population doesn't get anywhere near that. Part of the problem is our food has been doctored. A lot of the fiber content has been removed especially in the sad standard American diet. All of the fiber and the rich nutrients that

we used to have in our food has been removed from glyphosate and pesticides and so forth. And so we might be eating more, but we're getting less nutrient dense foods. And I love your story for a number of reasons, because one, it was really a focus on fiber. And there's another part of the feel good system, which we can talk about briefly as well, but just the fiber part alone helps to one, eliminate.

so that you're regular and you have soluable and unsoluable fiber that helps push things through your intestines. And there's a lot of science going on right now that like the chemical imbalance argument isn't true is false, but I look at it this way, like there's petroleum based antidepressants or there's natural substances that

we're talking about that are naturally occurring substances that help people feel better. And that's that's the bandwagon I'm currently on that I feel excited about in life is if you are providing yourself with the proper nutrients and maybe even doing blood tests to see what deficiencies you have and then building your nutritional plan based on those deficiencies. That's where I found thriving in my life. And so

That's what makes me excited to have this conversation with you. I don't know if you have anything you want to add on that or just jump into the Urbamate part of it as well.

Sheradon Orton (22:02.527)
I mean, yeah, that fiber, the fiber is so key because, you know, our gut is actually, like I said, the second brain and a lot of the serotonin that all of these antidepressants are trying to inhibit or promote is

produced in the gut, like 90 to 95 % of the serotonin in our body is in our gut. And so if we have a poor gut microbiome, if we have like a leaky gut, if we have inflammation, know, sending signals throughout our body, it doesn't matter what our weight is. It doesn't matter, you know, the, and even the stress that you were talking about with, with parents and moms and dads of...

and families, people who have family members with special needs, it can be very stressful and that cortisol can damage cells and cause inflammation. And so what fiber does too is it helps reduce all of that as well. so, and going into the second part of it, so there's a fiber and then a yerba mate. And a lot of people have never heard of yerba mate before, but it's a plant

It's a kind of a tea. It's not really a tea, but it's a plant found in South America. A lot of soccer players drink it. You go to Brazil and Argentina and everybody's drinking mate.

But the one that we have is a very concentrated form of yerba mate. It goes through a patented process. It's purified. A lot of the yerba mate out there doesn't go through the same process. So it doesn't have the condensed nutrition in there. Plus, it's not purified the way that this is purified.

Sheradon Orton (23:55.279)
Even like the the company is amazing too because they have their own farms down there. They have a genealogy of the plants and where they come from. Like it's a pretty cool like family tree literal. They know the genera- like where these plants came from. So but

Pure Living Family (24:07.443)
wow.

Sheradon Orton (24:14.521)
one of the, or there's a couple plant properties in this that act as a natural antidepressant as well. And so there's theobromine, saponins and chlorogenic acid that help you feel like help promote those good feelings and help with brain clarity and focus. And, you know, like I said before, you know, I was taking two to three naps a day just to

function and this has helped me so that I don't feel like I even need to nap for one and I have better focus and energy, brain clarity than I have pretty much my entire life. So it's kind of a one-two punch with these products because it helps you not snack, which most of those snacks are ultra-processed that have been stripped of the fiber and then the fiber you take before you eat, which helps

Pure Living Family (25:03.053)
Yeah.

Sheradon Orton (25:09.471)
give you more fiber, coat the lining of your stomach, feed your gut microbiome. It helps lower the glucose impact of the food that you do eat and helps with cholesterol and triglycerides. I mean, there's so many things that this fiber does that, I mean, I really do attribute this system to helping me get off four antidepressants after 25 years of struggling.

Pure Living Family (25:38.371)
That's so amazing. And just to add to that, that it helps generate natural GLP-1 in our gut as well. like fiber for one helps you feel full. And then Unamata is a natural alternative to ozempic or Monjaro or terzepatide, semiglutide, whatever you want to call it. And I've worked at a clinic for about a year and

There's so many people that are on GLP-1s. Now the disclaimer that a lot of times people are not fully informed on is a lot of times the mass that you're losing when you're on those GLP-1 injections is a lot of times you're losing bone and lean muscle mass. And so this would be an alternative to generate more GLP-1 naturally that lowers the cravings so you're not eating as much.

and then the fiber just helps to clear the system and eliminate. So I think that's a really powerful combination, one-two punch. I don't know if you want to add anything to that at all.

Sheradon Orton (26:46.729)
Yeah, just that, I mean, it is the system works naturally with your body to function the way that it was supposed to. So it increases the hormones that should be increased. It just helps your body function better. So it is kind of a natural GLP one. It is a natural statin or metformin, you know, all of those things that people have been prescribed, you know, this is a natural way for your body to address those issues.

and work on its own. And that's really what we want our body to do. You know, we don't want to just be managing the symptoms from the outside. We want to work from the inside out and alleviate those symptoms, which you really can alleviate a lot of symptoms.

Pure Living Family (27:34.111)
I think it fits perfectly with the functional medicine model which is root cause analysis as understanding what is causing the symptom to display itself and treating the underlying cause and not just doing guacamole with symptoms. So thank you for that description. We at Peer Living Family have been able to get a discount so typical retail price is $2.20 I want to say and if you buy from the link that will provide it.

in the show notes below, it's at $1.60 a month, $1.59. So that stated, you've been doing this protocol for how long now?

Sheradon Orton (28:16.415)
two and a half years.

Pure Living Family (28:18.168)
So in that two and a half years, what have been the biggest learnings from either your experience or even the people you've helped get on this protocol? What have been like the biggest success stories? Obviously your story is super inspirational, but maybe combine yours with any other people that you've worked with. What have been the biggest learnings?

Sheradon Orton (28:39.165)
Yeah, so it's amazing. I have seen seriously pretty miraculous things happen with people who have been using this. And the key though is consistency. mean, these are just food-based products. It's not like, you know, it's just food. And so that's why I try and tell people, it's like when we feed our body what it needs, your health will increase. And so...

When I have seen people use this consistently, I have seen people who were struggling with neuropathy from head to toe, who were having multiple like insulin injections daily, who were struggling with type two diabetes for 20 years, know, 20 plus years, people who were on metformin for 20 plus years, you know, all of these things being able to be done like.

I don't know if I need to censor my words, but you know what I'm talking about. They've fixed...

the underlying, the root cause of insulin resistance and they've improved their numbers, they've improved their blood work. They no longer struggle with the neuropathy, with the mental health issues. They've been able to lose weight that they weren't able to on Ozempic or get better in so many skin issues get better. Like it's amazing what happens when you heal the gut and just, yeah, it's.

But the key is consistency. So I keep telling people like, you guys, I don't know if I would have been consistent if I didn't go in to prove my husband wrong. I wasn't gonna give him any leeway to say I didn't use it right. And so I always emphasize, do this consistently, at least for 90 days, because the company offers a 90 day money back guarantee. So you can use this 90 days, you can check with your blood work, be consistent with it, and you will see your health change.

Pure Living Family (30:18.99)
Ha ha.

Pure Living Family (30:41.672)
I love it. And maybe as we close out the conversation for today, and we'd love to have you back because this has been an amazing conversation, but for someone who maybe is in a similar position that you were a few years back, maybe think about in your worst stage, what would you say to them or to yourself if you were to be able to go back in time and speak to that individual?

Sheradon Orton (31:09.529)
man, it gets me a little teary thinking about it. I mean, I spent days in bed crying. I would hide it from people. And what I would say, you know, when things feel overwhelming, when you feel paralyzed, that you can't even function, you can't move.

Open the window, let some light in, get some movement in, even if it's just putting on your workout shoes and stepping outside, even if it's just eating some small thing that's healthy that day. Just those little steps to say, okay, at least I did that. You don't have to jump in and do all of these changes, because that can seem overwhelming.

but just start little by little and over time you will get better and just say, okay, I can do this today. What can I do today that is a positive? And as you add those positives over and over, you will get there. And the one thing too that I have been trying to emphasize on my page and to other people is belief. Like there is power.

There is cellular power and I feel spiritual power when we believe and truly believe that we can get better, that things can improve, that your life can improve, that I mean there is power in belief. wherever that belief turns to, the universe, to God, know, there is power in belief. So believe that things can get better and take those small steps.

to do that each day, whether it's just opening the window or going outside, taking a deep breath. Like, that's what I would suggest.

Pure Living Family (33:11.606)
listening to this podcast because you've been a light today for so many people out there and my intention is to enter the minds and hearts of those special needs parents out there that could possibly be struggling both physically and mentally and I hope you hear this message and our sincerity that we are wanting to help you and so Sheridan again thank you so much for sharing your story and all
